January

We had a beautiful clear, crisp day, so we headed to the beach with the kiddos. I think Avery was in California with Nana on this particular day.

The kids were loving having their pictures taken, so we went with it

Our family was featured in the January edition of Lake Views, our local publication! Here is our cover:

A walk at Boulevard Park

At Boundary

Nana came for a visit when she brought Avery home from their big trip to California where they visited Aunt Ashleigh & Uncle Mark, Alcatraz, and other fun sights.

At Bloedel-Donovan Park

Jonathan was traveling for work, so it was up to Avery, Nana, and me to finish the Pinewood Derby cars in time for the big race

I marched in the Women’s March with friends on the 20th. It was very uplifting to be surrounded by so many others who are as concerned about the current political climate and threats to our institutions as I am. It also felt right to carry on my grandmother’s tradition of marching for women’s rights. “M”, as she often referred to herself, was very active in the feminist movement and other progressive causes.

With my friend, Jamie, also the Lake Views publisher (and yes, I borrowed Layla’s hat)!

Our group

I headed straight from the March to Avery’s Pinewood Derby to watch him and his brothers race. Avery made it all the way to the finals, and almost placed!

Another day, more popcorn!

I took a picture at the bus stop on this morning because it was the first time it was actually a little light outside since fall.

End of 2017

We celebrated Andrew & Nicole’s January birthdays together before they headed back over the mountains.  Andrew turned ten, and Nicole is Fourteen now!

We remembered to get a picture!

Layla loves Uncle Scott (that Santa guy, not so much)!

This was the Alexa Christmas. I think just about every adult got one this year! Here is Silas using ours. He asked for a dog song and got a Snoop Dogg song! And one with a very explicit intro, at that. Jonathan and I panicked, snapped this quick pic and put on a more appropriate dog song!

Kieron, putting together his Lego set

Avery, working on his Rubik’s cube

Layla, playing a little ditty on Avery’s keyboard

Watching TV one evening

Here is Layla modeling bathing suits

And here she is modeling underwear — Silas’ dirty underwear!

Avery got a Piper computer for Christmas. He was SO excited to build and use it!

First computer built at age 10!

On New Year’s Eve we went to our neighbor’s house to celebrate Los Anos Viejos. (She started celebrating when she lived in Equador.) We brought effigies to burn in a bonfire, the kids hit a piñata, and we celebrated the old and new year with good food and company.

December

December is always a busy month. Here’s what we were up to when we weren’t doing the typical holiday things:

AFV (America’s Funniest Home Videos) is a favorite at our house. Everyone likes it!

Jonathan got himself an early Christmas present – a new Subaru Outback! Okay, technically, it was a long-overdue purchase for BOTH of us. The station wagon is our “cool” car. It really freaks me out thinking this will likely be the first car Avery learns to drive!

A cool panorama of the lake and our beach.

Silas loves apples

Our cute boys being silly in the kitchen

Bathtime

Putting up Christmas lights is a snap at this house!

Decorating our gingerbread house. Thank you, Costco, for selling these pre-assembled so we can get straight to the fun part!

Loving on her biggest bro

Nothing like a little Christmas Star Wars puzzle to get the season going.

Silas discovered YouTube drawing tutorials. Give this kid some markers, a stack of paper, and a laptop, and you won’t hear from him all day. I literally had to make him step away just to eat a little lunch. There is something so rewarding about seeing your child in a flow, doing something they love so much they can’t pull themselves away. The intensity of this five-year-old is pretty impressive, and makes me so proud!

Maui 2017

We had a wonderful time visiting Maui again this year! We spent the majority a week in Kaanapali, and then a couple more days in Wailea. Here is what we were up to the first week:

Heading to the pool for the first time

Avery really looked out for Layla as she got used to the kiddie pool

I like this shot with Layla and the foreground and her brothers going down the slide behind her

Getting some pirate treasure!

Another day at the pool

Looking all suave…

And then!

She’s up again!

There we go!

Layla loved feeding the koi

Silas and I got some super tall snow cones!

November

November proved to be another busy month for the King household. Here’s some of what we were up to:

Jonathan volunteered at the school as part of the Watch DOGS program. The boys loved having him in class!

Kieron in 2nd grade

Silas and his buddy, Porter

Left Layla alone again and ended up with Maui Spice Rub sprinkled on the carpet!

Hayden came to visit one weekend and we got a little more snow

Playing at the school playground

After school: practicing piano

Math program on the computer

And some art

Silas at basketball practice

The kids and I did the whole trail and back (about 6.5 miles) and barely made it back before nightfall! Look at all the leaves!

Kieron and his buddy, Eli, playing with Layla

Trying out Mommy’s boots

Caught getting into Mommy’s boots again

When you can’t carry your purse(s), baby, celery stick and remote all at the same time.

Trying on Silas’ dirty underwear. Layla likes to get into the hamper.

Avery won this popcorn tin at a cub scout event

Striking dancer pose on the North Lake Whatcom Trail

Date night with this little munchkin

Layla reading in her freshly painted room.

Watching America’s Funniest Home Videos

Silas & Porter in class

Love having this little hand to hold

Layla loves playtime at the gymnastics building

Nothing like a little rough-housing with Daddy before bed to tire them out
