Birth Story

Wow, almost three weeks have flown by since little Silas made his entrance into the world. I have a bit of catching up to do on my blogging, but what better excuse to be behind than having a newborn (and a 22-month-old and an almost five-year-old) in the house, right? I better get his birth story written down before I forget any more details!

We had a c-section scheduled for March 1st. I wouldn’t have been at all surprised if I went into labor early (he seemed like a giant baby), and I was a little nervous about the possibility of a leap year birthday. But Thursday morning came and there was no baby, so it was time to head to our appointment. It seemed weird and surreal to schedule something as significant as the birth of a child. Avery was ten days late before he arrived via an induction which resulted in a 22 hr labor and c-section. Kieron surprised us by arriving three days before his appointment – I woke up on Cinco di Mayo to contractions and had a baby six hours later. I was really happy to get that “honey, it’s time!” experience.

This time everything was very calculated. We arrived fresh-faced at the birthing center. I buzzed in and said cheerfully, “I’m here to have a baby.” So they let us in and we began getting prepped for surgery. I got hooked up to all sorts of machines and Jonathan ventured off to find a good cup of coffee. Before long it was time to go to the OR. I was a little nervous about the spinal this time around since I would not have the advantage of being distracted by contractions. Fortunately, it was not that bad at all. Shortly after the numbness set in, they put up the curtain and got to work. I distinctly remember trying to look all around the room and take in as much as possible – where the baby scale was, where all the docs and staff were, the expression on Jonathan’s face, etc. I kept trying to get a good look at the reflection in the light above me, perhaps I could glimse a peek of what was going on behind the curtain, but it was tough to make out much.

When they started pushing on the top of my belly, we knew we were about to meet our little guy. Jonathan stood up and snapped some shots as he emerged. I could hear his little cries, and then they lifted him up over the curtain. I remember thinking “he is so cute!”

After that they took him to be wiped off and checked out by the pediatrician. Jonathan went over to take more pictures and the doc asked if he’d like to cut the cord. He hesitated at first, but soon decided it was something he’d like to try at least once. Then they weighed and measured the baby – a whopping 9.0 lbs (I knew he was huge).

Finally they gave him to Jonathan to bring over to meet me. I think we all cried a little. We swooned over our new baby and his adorableness, and wished him a happy birthday.

Bump Shot 37 Weeks

As I write this, I am currently 38 weeks and 2 days along – almost there! I’m so glad we had the forethought to take a few bump shots last weekend. It’s so much easier to get this stuff done when it’s the first child, or even the second, but we’re trying our best to make sure baby boy #3 is well documented!

I figure now is a good time to share a few of the details of this pregnancy. It has surely been the hardest, mostly because a) I was nauseous for the first trimester, which I hadn’t had the joy of experiencing before, and b) I was taking care of not one, but two active children while pregnant this time around. So far this baby has distinguished himself by being super strong and active. I don’t recall Avery or Kieron being such kickers! And although I’m measuring right on each week at the OB’s, I could swear he’s going to be a giant!

It’s fun to muse about what this little boy will be like and look like. Avery and Kieron are both so unique and different from one another. And each seems like a pretty even split between myself and Jonathan, but in completely different ways. Will this one be more like Avery or Kieron, or another totally different combination? As the day gets nearer, we’re more and more excited to find out, and can’t wait to meet our new addition the the family!

Meanwhile…

February

February is almost over, and there are no snowstorms or power outages to report. This has been the month of parties. Four birthday parties, one Super Bowl party, one engagement party, and one “we’re having a baby party,” to be exact. Unfortunately, we forgot to take any pictures at our baby party, but I’ll let the pics below tell the story of what we’ve been up to the rest of the month:

Right after eating breakfast, Kieron looks forward to making coffee with Daddy every morning

Our little chef is big on helping out in the kitchen

Kieron moved into his big boy bed almost two weeks ago. The transition went surprisingly smoothly. At nap time he is still in his crib though because he gets up over and over again and Mommy is in no condition to be lifting him back into bed repeatedly.

Dancing to some tunes before dinner

Screaming “get away from me!”

And when that doesn’t work, throwing elbows (I just love the shirts they’re wearing in these pics)

We went to an engagement party last weekend. The groom rowed in college with Jonathan, and the party was at a rowing club on Lake Union, and much of the team was there. Avery and Kieron had a blast playing with Jim & Renee’s kids, Logan and Ali. We got some cute pics of them on the ergs.

The Beginning of 2012

2012 got off to a rough start for us. We brought a cold back from Texas and were all sick for New Year’s. The boys went to bed early, and Jonathan and I barely made it up to watch the ball drop in New York before turning in for the night. I think it’s the first time since I was a kid that I haven’t stayed up until midnight on New Year’s Eve.

The following weekend Nana came up for a visit. She babysat the boys Saturday night while Jonathan and I photographed a wedding in Seattle. And on Sunday morning we celebrated a belated Christmas together.

We spent the next weekend stimulating the economy at Ikea and U Village. Actually, we didn’t end up buying very much, but we did a lot of looking around. It was a good thing we left when we did though. On the way home from Seattle on Sunday it started to snow. And snow. And snow.

Turns out, “snowmageddon” was here. Over the next few days we got well over a foot of snow, most of it came in the beginning and just hung around all week. We didn’t even leave the neighborhood until the following Saturday! Jonathan worked from home Mon-Wed, and when he could he took the boys outside to play. One downside of being 7.5 months pregnant when it snows is that you can’t really go play like you normally would. Then Wednesday night we got more snow, a lot of wind, and on Thursday morning we lost power for 57 hours.

I recall shortly after our last big power outage (when I was pregnant with Avery) Jonathan went out and purchased a generator. I believe I may have given him a hard time about it. Let me just publicly state that I am so thankful my Eagle Scout husband got that generator! Talk about being prepared. It was so nice to have a cold refrigerator, a decent cup of coffee, run the toaster oven, and especially use my blow dryer. I really did not want to air dry my hair in our freezing cold house! So babe, I just want to say, “I love you, and you were right about the generator.”

Unfortunately we weren’t able to hook up to our furnace, so it was pretty cold inside, especially the second night. But it wasn’t so bad, it was just starting to get “not fun” when the power finally came on Saturday night (just in time to heat up the house before the boys went to bed). I was so excited, I ran the dishwasher, the laundry, and the vacuum with the disturbing enthusiasm of a Stepford wife. Over the week, the boys (mostly Avery) fit in a lot of sledding, hot chocolate drinking, and playing with Daddy. It was nice having Jonathan home for a couple of impromptu days off, sort of a cold stay-cation. And it was fun to go back to basics for a little while, but it is great to have the things we take for granted back! Here’s hoping we have a more relaxing February before the baby arrives!

Christmas in Texas

We celebrated Christmas in Texas this year. We flew in a few days early and spent the majority of our time shopping, wrapping, baking, and having play dates and sleep overs with cousins Nicole and Andrew. On Christmas Eve Day we met up with my cousin, Laura, and her family at Neiman Marcus in Dallas. They had a special holiday display set up where the kids could climb through tunnels that meandered through the store-front windows. This was a hit with the kids, who raced through the exhibit dozens of times.

Uncle Scott & Aunt Manivanh hosted Christmas Eve. We munched on hors d’oeurves, played our traditional Christmas “dice game,” the kids decorated a gingerbread house, and Santa even dropped by for a visit.

Christmas Day was celebrated at Grammy and Papa’s house. Avery woke up early that morning and ventured downstairs by himself while we were still sleeping. Fortunately, Jonathan woke up and discovered him opening presents. Most of the stockings were emptied out, and one gift for Scott & Manivanh was unwrapped. I was a little surprised that Avery did this, but apparently Jonathan once did something similar when he was little, so it must be some mischievous trait Avery gets from his dad. Shortly after re-stuffing the stockings, we all opened presents together. The kids were totally in their element and paper and boxes were everywhere. We had a delicious Christmas feast that evening with all the traditional fixings.

Overall, we had a great holiday, and enjoyed spending time with our family in Texas. Here are some pictures from our trip:
