Avery the Teenager!

We have a quaranteenager in the house now! Avery celebrated his thirteenth birthday at the end of March. Shortly after we planned his party and sent out invitations the country started shutting down and it looked increasing likely we might have to postpone. He had planned a “fancy” pizza party at the golf club for a dozen of his nearest and dearest. We waited, held our breath, and prepared Avery for bad news. On March 16 the governor closed all restaurants and bars throughout the state and expanded social gathering limits. Thank you, Jay Inslee, for making the call and getting Mom and Dad off the hook!

Avery is such a trooper. He took it in stride, and if he was disappointed, he didn’t show it. We celebrated his birthday with surprise Easter buns for breakfast. (Currants are very hard to come by these days, but we managed.) Instead of cake he wanted ice cream, and requested to have it at every meal. Our vegetarian health nut got what he asked for.

In the afternoon we had a repeat of Avery’s twelfth birthday and went to the Fisher Creek bike park where we let the kids ride around on bikes. He heard from a number of friends on his birthday which made him feel special.

At thirteen, Avery is sweet, smart, responsible, steadfast, a serious student and a goofy son. He loves his siblings, being outdoors, being active, and is always impressing us with what a genuinely good kid he is. It is so fun being his parents! Happy birthday, Avery Liam. We love you!

Avery Turns Twelve

Avery’s twelfth birthday means we now have less than a year left without a teenager in the house. If his personality now is any indication of what is to come, I think we are ready to take it on. I am constantly impressed with the young man we are raising. Avery is sweet, sensitive, self-motivated, and hard-working. He is fiercely loyal to his siblings, chooses very nice friends, and is so sweet to his parents. I’m just trying to enjoy every second of it because I know soon his friends will become the priority in his life and before long girls will take precedence over Legos.

At twelve, Avery says he wants to be a firefighter. I honestly thought he was going to say software engineer though, and we also see his dental skills evolving as he continues to remove his brothers’ teeth, which I am incredibly thankful for.

For his birthday Avery wanted to go to the local bike park with a few of his buddies and then have a sleepover. It made my heart so happy to see what a sweet group of friends Avery has decided to surround himself with, many of whom were part of his original crew from our previous days in Snoqualmie.

Happy birthday, Avery Liam. We love you more than you’ll ever know!

Avery is Eleven!

Avery just celebrated his eleventh revolution around the sun. Time is such a funny thing. It seems like he was just a baby, but at the same time, eleven seems about right. I am so proud of the big boy/young man Avery is becoming. He is smart, kind, and sensitive. One of the things I admire most about him is how fiercely he loves his little brothers and sister. Sure, he enjoys teasing them like any big brother, but he holds Silas’ hand at school and plays Legos with him for hours. He takes care of Layla, reads her stories, and looks out for her. And he loves being outside with Kieron. It’s easy to forget there are three years between those two.

At eleven, Avery loves Legos, chess, the outdoors, and Nerf. He takes pride in the fact that he is one of the fastest boys at school (and a good defender) but he does not want to play team sports or run track (breaking his arm playing soccer didn’t help any). Avery thinks girls are pretty boring, he doesn’t understand why some of the kids at school just walk around and talk at recess, and he is disappointed the middle school does not have a play ground.

This year has easily been the most difficult of Avery’s young life. Moving at the age of ten is hard on a kid (just ask me and Jonathan, we both went through it and swore we wouldn’t do it to our own). But then we did, and it has been just as tough on Avery as I remember it. And making it even harder, we moved from a neighborhood where he could walk to school and most of his friends’ houses to a home where we have to drive ten minutes to get anywhere. Are there advantages, sure, but I just really have to hand it to Avery, he’s been through a lot this year.

And through it all, Avery is excelling in school and has gradually made friends. He also had a really special teacher (who happens to have a son who is in class and friends with Silas). It has been reassuring to have an adult at school who is in Avery’s corner.

I think this next year is going to be really special for Avery. He is SO ready for middle school — even if there isn’t a playground. I’m excited to see what the future holds for him!

Avery – 10 Years Old!

Birthday season at the King household is in full swing right now. Avery celebrated a big milestone, turning double digits last week, and he is the coolest ten-year-old I know. It’s been a big year for him, becoming the oldest of four children, getting a little sister, and earning new privileges and responsibilities. He’s thriving and is such a fun kid – sweet, smart, sensitive, and always has his nose in a book. He enjoys basketball, cub scouts and parkour, tolerates piano lessons, hates craneflies, and wants to be either a sailor, engineer or programmer when he grows up. We love you Avery Liam!

With his big birthday gift, an electronic keyboard. We like the headphones, he likes the sound effects!

Avery Turns Nine!

Avery turned nine this March. It makes me pretty sentimental because this is half-way to eighteen. Sniff. It doesn’t seem like it’s been very long, but in another nine years, he will be applying to colleges. These really are the tween years. He is still so much a little kid in our eyes, but there are are some pretty significant milestones coming up in the not-too-distant future. Our little boy is growing up fast! I am trying to enjoy the days when his voice is high, he thinks girls have cooties, and he is shorter than me while I still can.

Avery is an awesome nine-year-old, and we feel lucky to be his parents. I’d say he fits into the firstborn stereotype pretty well. He is serious, cooperative, a great student, and seems to really want to please us and live up to our expectations. He talks nearly non-stop at home, and can be quite goofy, but he is very quiet at school and in public. He can be moody at times, and we’ve noticed a bit more sass as the years progress, but overall, he’s a really good kid. He loves to read, and blows through books faster than we can download them. He puts up with piano, although I know most days he would throw in the towel if we let him. He enjoys chess, basketball, and especially parkour. Did I mention he likes video games? He will literally play until he gets sick if we let him.

Avery would like to be an inventor, software engineer or video game developer when he grows up. He’s also mentioned wanting to be a YouTuber who makes Minecraft tutorials (please, no). At this point Mom and Dad wonder if he has a future in dentistry. He’s always had an interest in it, and to date he’s pulled at least four of his own teeth – and that’s my conservative guess. Twice this month he’s woken up with a loose tooth, and then that evening about an hour after we put him to bed, he gleefully bounces down the stairs, “look, I pulled my tooth out!” I can’t believe he does this.

We celebrated Avery’s birthday with a party at Adventure bowl. It’s a small bowling alley that is adjoined with a pizza place that according to Avery, has the best pizza in the whole wide world. He and his friends had a great time together. Happy birthday Avery. We love you!

I was touched by how considerate Avery was with his time during the party. He wanted to switch aisles periodically so he could bowl with all of his friends, and his brothers too. DSC_3256 DSC_3258
