Early January

Wow, 2014 has flown by! Here it is mid-March, and I’m blogging the first post of the year. I’m planning a burst of posts to get all caught up this week, so here goes:

What do we do on beautiful pacific northwest winter days? We go outside!

Garbage day is always an exciting day at our house. I try not to plan errands on this morning since the boys look forward to watching the trucks come by.

Ringing in 2014, Parent-style

This may not surprise you, but when you’re the parents of young children and you live in the suburbs, New Year’s Eve isn’t usually super exciting. Fortunately, all you really need to have a good time are: good company, champagne, and a TV. Check, check, and check!

Caroline and Chad came over with their baby, Ethan, to ring in the new year parent-style. Here are a few pics from the night.

Christmas 2013

This Christmas was bittersweet. I love this time of year… the carols, the lights, the decorating, the baking… and it’s magical with a house full of small children. We were really looking forward to celebrating our first Christmas in our new house, and having all of our family together under one roof.

Nana’s sister, Auntie Ish, flew out from New Zealand, and spent Christmas with us. It was such a treat having her here, and for the boys to get to know her.

Losing Jonathan’s dad the week before was very hard, and Christmas definitely wasn’t the same without him. But it came just the same, and I’m proud to say we made the most of it despite everything.

Grandpa

The week before Christmas we received terrible news that Jonathan’s dad had passed away unexpectedly.  Bill was a great dad, and he loved his family. In Jonathan’s words: He was kind, gentle, patient, and inquisitive. He taught me to be curious about the world around me and how to take everything apart and figure out how it worked. He was always there for me. He held each of my three baby boys on the days they were born, and was a loving grandpa as they grew into little people. We’ll miss him dearly.

Visiting Santa and his Reindeer

We visited Santa at the Cougar Mountain Zoo again this year. I love our tradition of making an afternoon of our Santa visit and visiting the reindeer and other zoo animals.

We arrived in the morning, right when they opened, and got to see the tiger’s “Christmas Party.” I wish we had some pictures of it. The tigers got a couple of Christmas trees stuffed with meat, and some wrapped presents with treats inside, which they ripped to shreds. Afterwards, we rushed to see Santa. When we got there, no one else was in line yet, so he spent some extra time going over Christmas lists with the boys.
